Jessica Garza | Former COO | Tech Nomad

I've often heard people say that the lifestyle of a digital nomad is filled with adventure, thrill, and happiness. However, that portrayal is not entirely accurate. It's not all sunshine and roses; where there are positives, there are also negatives.

Having been a digital nomad for quite some time now, I feel it's important to share my own struggles. If I had to sum it up in one sentence: I don't have a permanent home, I constantly feel broke, and I lack a stable group of friends—these are the challenges I face.

As a digital nomad, I'm always on the move. When I finish my work, there's no "going home" for me; my home is wherever I happen to be when the workday ends. Whether it's a beach, a café, a fancy restaurant, a hotel room, a mountain, a trail, or a riverside camp, my "home" constantly changes. While it can be exciting to experience different places, it eventually becomes exhausting. I start to miss having a permanent home. But this is the path I chose as a tech nomad.

Money is another significant issue. I work while I travel—or travel while I work—24/7. Despite having savings or a backup in my bank account, I often feel broke. This is largely because of the FOMO I experience in new cities. Seeing people enjoy fancy restaurants and various activities makes me feel the urge to do the same. However, indulging in these experiences often leaves me feeling guilty, regretful, and financially strained.

Furthermore, it's challenging to maintain friendships when constantly moving. I've struggled to form a stable group of friends because each time I move to a new city, I have to start over. Although I've learned to live with this, it still sucks. Sometimes I feel lonely and left out, yet I'm also grateful to be away from the noise and chaos of the cities.

In the end, I've realized that to gain something, you have to sacrifice something. My sacrifices have granted me more freedom, a sense of calm, and contentment with my life. It's all about keeping forward momentum, just like Jessica Garza
